Only rich Anglicans could become MPs. Catholics, Presbyterians and poor Anglicans couldn’t vote or be MPs

- Inequality in the Irish Parliament - Large portion of Irish population was not represented
- Influence of American War of Independence and French Revolution - Irish were inspired by idea of “all men are created equal” and “liberty, equality, fraternity”

During the American War of Independence, when French gave their support to Americans, the ‘Protestant Ascendancy’ formed ‘The Volunteers’ to defend Ireland against a possible French Invasion. (as Ireland was part of Britain at the time)

- Wolfe Tone had arrived at Lough Swilly, Co. Donegal with more French troops
- That battle ended in defeat & Wolfe Tone was captured and arrested
- He was sentenced to death by hanging. He committed suicide instead
- Thus ended the 1798 Rebellion
