What are common indications for the use of doxycycline?
- Acne Vulgaris
- LRTI
- Infective exacerbation of COPD
- Pneumonia
- Atypical pneumonia

How do tetracylines work?
Inhibit bacterial protein synthesis
What are important adverse effects of tetracyclines?
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Hypersensitivity
- Oesophageal irritation/ulceration/dysphagia
- Photosensitivity
- Discolouration of tooth enamel
- Intracrenial hypertension
When are tetracyclines contraindicated?
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Children under age of 12 years
What are important interactions which occur with tetracyclines?
- Calcium
- Antacids
- Iron
- Warfarin
When should tetracyclines be given in relation to calcium, antacids or iron supplements?
2 Hours after administration of calcium, iron or antacids
What routes can tetracyclines be given?
Oral only
What is the dose of doxycycline usually given?
100-200 mg daily
What advice would you give to someone taking tetracyclines?
Wash down with water or take whilst standing - stops them getting stuck and causing ulceration
