What are examples of antipseudomonal penicillins?
Pipercillin with tazobactam
When are antipseudomonal penicillins used?
Severe infections with resistant antibiotics, or patients who are immunocompromised:
- LRTI
- UTI
- Intra-abdominal sepsis
- Skin and soft tissue infection
What are important adverse reactions of Tazocin?
- GI upset
- Antibiotic associated colitis
- Hypersensitivity
When should the dose of antipseudomonal penicillins be reduced?
Moderate/severe renal impairment
What are important interactions to be aware of when prescribing Tazocin?
- Methotrexate
- Warfarin
How does Tazocin interact with warfarin?
Kills gut flora that synthesise vitamin K
How is tazocin administered?
IV only
What is the dose of tazocin normally prescribed IV?
4.5g every 8 hours - can be given every 6 for severe infection
How is tazocin reconstituted and administered?
- 2.25 g in 10 mL/4.5g in 20 ml water for injection/NaCl 0.9%.
- Dilute reconstitution in 50-150 mL 0.9% saline/5% glucose
- Give over 30 minutes
