Tests For Ions: Carbonates+sulfates Flashcards
how do you test for carbonate ions?
use hcl
-add hcl to the carbonate ion
-to form CO2 and water
what is the equation for the carbonate ion reaction with hcl?
CO2,2- + 2H+ –> CO2 + H2O
hwo do you know carbon dioxide is produced?
there will be fizzing of the carbonate
how can u test that this fizz is carbon dioxide?
you buubl gas through a test tube of lime water
-if turns cloudy carbon dixide is the gas
-carbonate ion is present.
how do you test for a sulfate ion?
-use dilute hcl
-then following by barium chloride
-white precipitate will form of barium sulfate
-original compound ocntained sulfate
Why do we add hcl to our solution when testing for sulfates ?
to eliminate carbonate ions
why do we add dilute HCL?
TO ELIMINATE ANY CARRBONATES THAT could potentially give false results
