Bonding and structure; Ionic Bonds Flashcards
what are compounds?
atoms of different elements chemically bonded together
what is ionic bonding?
-transfer of electrons
-METAL AND NON METAL
-electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositeley charged ions
what are ions formed from + give 2 examples+ a half equation
formed from atoms that loose or gain electrons electrons
eg. Mg atom looses two electrons to become Mg2+ ion
Mgβ> Mg2+ + 2e-
Cl + e- β> Cl-
how can u determine number of electrons on outer shell on the periodic table+ provide an example?
look at group number β> eg.magnesium group 2 β> charge would be 2+ when 2 electons are lost
how would you determine the charge on a non metal ion?
group number-8
what is the molecular formula of the ion hydroxide?
OH-
what is the molecular formula for the ion nitrate?
NO3-
what is the molecular formula for the ion ammonium?
NH4+
what is the molecular formula for the sulfate ion?
SO4,2-
what is the molecular formula for the carbonate ion?
CO3,2-
how do you find the formula of an ionic compound?
use swap and drop method
what is an example of a giant ionic compound?
sodium chloride
what is the overall charge in an ionic compound + exaplain?
overall charge is 0β> the metal and non metal ions cancel each other out
describe the shape + structure of giant ionic lattices
-cubic shape
-regular structure
-giant repeating pattern
how do ions in ionic lattices arrange themslves?
in a structure where they can maximise attractions and minimise repulsions.
what do different ionic structures have?
different shapes
do ionic compounds dissolve in water + why?
yes mostβ> water molecules are polar β> water molecules attract the postive and negative ions->break up the structure
do ionic compounds conduct electricity + why?
yes when molten or dissolved in soloution β>ions are free to move around
do ionic compounds have high or low melting points + why?
high mpβ>many strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ionsβ>need alot of energy to overcome these forces
why is sodium chloride called βgiantβ ?
because its the same repeating unit over and over again
