test 3. 12 Flashcards
difference between small and large intestine
SI: villi- nutrient absorbtion
LI- No villi, more goblet cells making mucous, water and salt absorbtion
LI diarrhea presents with
increased frequency
decreased volume
frank blood- hematochezia
mucus
what can cause constipation
dehydrated
mechanical vs functional obstruction
behavioral
painful
management of 1st constipation episode
rehydrate
remove impacted feces
laxative/ diet change
managment of recurring constipation episodes
rehydrate
find and fix underlying cause
remove feces
diet change
laxative
prokinetics
how does insoluble fiber work as laxative
poorly fermentable
- bulk forming- increases water content, decreases GI transit time nad increases frequency of defectation
- make larger poops, high water content= softer poop
cellulose, liginins, peanut
how do soluble fibers work
soluble= highly fermentable
* make soft stools with less bulk
* make SCFA which increases colonic motility
beet pulp, gums/pectins, psyllium
megacolon soluble or nonsoluble fiber
soluble- do not want to increase fecal bulk
how does lactulose work
- poorly absorbed pilysaccharide that is converted into organic acids by fermentation in the gut
- these organic acids will increase colonic secretion and motility
- also hyperosmolar so it will pull water into the GI tract= softer stools
— is a 5HT4 agonist that increases gastric motility
cisapride- taken off human market so it needs to be compounded
two types of feline megacolon
- dilated- endstage- very thin walls- functional defect or idiopathic
- hypertrophic- 2nd to obstruction (less common)
histiocytic ulcerative colitis presents in
young boxers and frenchies
less then 4 years old
clinical signs of histiocytic ulcerative colitis
large bowel diarrhea
weight loss
anemia
low protein
biopsy of histiocytic ulcerative colitis will show
- loss of colonic epithelial and goblet cells
- large numbers of PAS + macrophages
boxers- LI diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, low protein, thickened colon
caused by AI ecoli
histiocytic ulcerative colitis is caused by
adherent and invasive E coli
boxers- LI diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, low protein, thickened colon
