Q

how does insoluble fiber work as laxative

A

poorly fermentable

  • bulk forming- increases water content, decreases GI transit time nad increases frequency of defectation
  • make larger poops, high water content= softer poop

cellulose, liginins, peanut

7
Q

how do soluble fibers work

A

soluble= highly fermentable
* make soft stools with less bulk
* make SCFA which increases colonic motility

9
Q

how does lactulose work

A
  • poorly absorbed pilysaccharide that is converted into organic acids by fermentation in the gut
  • these organic acids will increase colonic secretion and motility
  • also hyperosmolar so it will pull water into the GI tract= softer stools
