Race
a socially defined category that artificially divides people into groups on the basis of distinct physical traits and characteristics
Ethnicity
large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background
Culture
a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, behavior patterns, values, customs, and thought characteristics that guides their worldview and decision making
Competence
having the capacity to function effectively as an individual and or organization within the context of the cultural beliefs, behaviors, and needs presented by consumers and their communities
Cultural Competence
the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that allow integration and translation of knowledge about various cultures into the practice of pharmacy. Having the ability to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors and to tailor that care to patients’ social, cultural, and linguistic needs
Cultural Humility
a healthcare provider’s commitment to and active engagement in a lifelong practice of self-evaluation and self-critique within the context of the patient-pharmacist relationship
Cultural Proficiency
when pharmacists and health care systems set a goal to view culture as a positive component of health, rather than as something to understand and provide equitable patient care
