Tensile strength of plant fibers (8) Flashcards
Define tensile strength:
The force the fiber can withstand before breaking
Suggest how structure of sclerenchyma fibers make them useful for making rope
Thick walls contain lignin that strengthens structure and makes it waterproof
Flexible meaning it doesn’t break easily
Devise a valid investigation to determine the effect of storage temperature on the tensile strength of manila rope and nylon rope:
1)Ensure the length and diameter of rope are the same, as well as relative humidity
2)Store at 5 different temperatures (e.g. 16,18,20,22,24 C)
3)Apply weights until rope breaks
4)Calculate change in tensile strength
Control variables:
-Length and width of fibers
-Temperature and moisture
-Time given before fiber breaks
-Size of masses added
