Fertilisation in plants Flashcards
how does fertilisation in plants happen?
When nucleus of pollen ( with male DNA) joins the nucleus of the egg/ovule ( with female DNA)
Name of plants that produce and bear their seeds in fruits
Angiosperms
What is sporogenesis?
Produces haploid megaspores and microspores from mother cells
What is gametogenesis?
Production of gametes from these spores
On what 2 conditions will the pollen grain germinate?
-If pollen grain and stigma it attaches to is of same species
-But not the same plant to prevent self-fertilisation
What happens after pollen lands on stigma?
Pollen tube begins to grow
What occurs while generative cell travels down the tube?
Divides simultaneously by mitosis, 2 male nuclei formed.
Why is growth of pollen tube rapid?
Because of fast elongation of cell
Once tube has entered micropyle what happens?
Double fertilisation:
-One male nucleus fuses with nuclei of 2 the polar bodies to form triploid nucleus
-The other one fuses with egg cell to form diploid zygote
What is micropyle?
Small opening of the ovule in plants
