Spirometer (17) Flashcards
Define tidal volume:
Amount of air that moves in and out of lungs, measured from the peak to the trough
How to calculate respiratory minute ventilation?
Tidal volume multiplied by breathing rate
Define residual volume and its function:
Volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximum forceful expiration
Needed to prevent the walls of bronchioles and alveoli from sticking
How is oxygen consumption calculated from a spirometer graph?
From the slope of the trace (gradient), drawing a line from bottom of the trace
3 changes to graph as a result of exercise:
1) Increased tidal volume, distance from peak to trough is higher
2)Increased rate of oxygen consumption, a steeper slope on the trace
3)Increased breathing rate, peaks are closer to each other
Control variables when selecting humans for the sample:
-Age
-Gender
-Fitness level
-Lifestyle, e.g. smoker or drinker
