Cardiovascular disease Flashcards
Whats atherosclerosis?
Hardening of arteries, causing build up of fatty deposits. Can lead to coronary heart disease and stroke
How can blood clot cause heart disease?
When atheroma deposits in coronary artery, bloody supply to heart tissue is cut off.
Cells in tissue need oxygen for aerobic respiration so this block in artery causes heart attack.
What has to happen first for atheroma to deposit?
Endothelium has to be damaged (by high blood pressure and smoking)
What’s used to measure blood pressure?
Sphygmomanometer or blood pressure meter
Equation for blood pressure
Force / Surface area of the vessels
6 treatments for cardiovascular disease
-Statins
-Platelet inhibitors
-ACE inhibitors
-Diuretics
-Anticoagulants
-Calcium channel blockers
What do anticoagulants and platelet inhibitors do?
Prevent blood clots
