Protein synthesis Flashcards
Function of helicase
Unwinds and unzips DNA
Where do RNA nucleotides bind to after DNA is unzipped?
Binds to complementary DNA bases in antisense strand
Function of RNA polymerase
Joins RNA nucleotides with phosphodiester bonds
What causes RNA polymerases to detach?
Stop codon
Transcription function
To produce an mRNA (messenger) strand so it detaches from DNA and leaves nucleus.
Where does translation occur?
Ribosomes (rRNA)
Where does mRNA codons bind to?
Each mRNA codon binds to tRNA molecule with a complementary anticodon.
What happens when mRNA codon binds to tRNA anticodon?
tRNA is bound to an amino acid, afterwards a peptide bond is formed between 2 amino acids.
When does translation end?
Amino acids are bonded together in a polypeptide chain until a stop codon is reached. Polypeptide is released
