Eukaryotic cell Flashcards
Function of nucleolus
Produces rRNA (ribosomes)
Where can ribosomes attach to after being produced
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
How many subunits in ribosome?
2
What are flattened sacs in R.E.R called?
Cisternae (its membranes are covered with ribosomes)
How does translation in R.E.R take place?
1)Ribosomal subunits assemble on the strand of mRNA
2)Polypeptide chain produced passes through the R.E.R membrane and into its lumen
3)Polypeptide can be modified, could be turned to glycoprotein
4)Polypeptide is packaged into vesicles
5)Vesicles are transported to Golgi apparatus, polypeptides are further modified
6)After the Golgi apparatus it is a functional protein, packaged into vesicles which fuse to cell membrane, proteins are secreted from the cell
In lumen of R.E.R what could be added to the proteins?
1)Sugar groups to form glycoproteins
2)Metal groups, when 4 polypeptide chains are assembled this forms haemoglobin
Features of lysosome
.Contain powerful digestive enzymes such as protease.
.Internal fluid in lysosome is acidic, this is because the optimum ph of these enzymes is acidic.
