Temporal lobe Flashcards
Where is the temporal lobe located?
In the lower central part of the brain near the ears
What happens when the temporal lobe is damaged?
There will be hearing loss/ deafness, memory impairment, disturbance of selective attention of auditory input, impaired organization & categorization of verbal material, hard to recognize faces and unable to comprehend speech.
What are the key functions of the temporal lobe?
It plays an important role in our decision to perceive and remember certain features of an environment. It has a huge role in long term memory formation. It also helps us to identify faces and objects.
What is the primary auditory cortex’s function?
It receives and processes sounds from both ears.
The primary auditory cortex has 2 cortexes, what are they specialized in?
The left auditory cortex is specialized to hear verbal sounds such as voices and words. The right auditory cortex is specialized to hear non-verbal sounds such as music.
What is Wernicke’s Aphasia?
It is when a patient has difficulty comprehending speech & have difficulty speaking in a meaningful way
How will a patient with Wernicke’s Aphasia act?
The patient will most likely have fluent & grammatically correct speech but their words would be “strung together” but is not what is classified as understandable language (word salad)
