Brain hemispheres Flashcards
What is hemispheric specialization?
It Is the idea that one hemisphere has specialized functions, or has greater control over a particular function.
What do the left and right hemisphere control?
The right hemisphere receives sensory information from the left side of the body & controls movement on the left side of the body.
The left hemisphere receives sensory information from the right side of the body & controls movement on the right side of the body.
What is the cerebral cortex?
It is a deep furrow that divides the cerebrum into 2 halves and is highly wrinkled, making the brain more efficient as it increases the surface area of the brain and the amount of neurons within it.
What is the corpus callous?
It is a bundle of axons which connects the left and right hemisphere, enabling them to communicate.
What happens if the corpus callous is cut?
The right and left hemisphere will still be able to function but are unable to communicate with one another.
What is the cerebral cortex involved with?
It is involved with the more complex mental abilities such as perception, learning, memory, language, thinking and problem solving.
If a patient saw a biscuit in their left visual field, would the patient be able to say what they had seen?
No, they would not but they would be able to draw it.
What does the right hemisphere specialize in?
Spatial and visual thinking.
What does the left hemisphere specialize in?
Language and logic.
