Hindbrain Flashcards
1
Q
What is the hindbrain and where is it located?
A
The hindbrain is located at the base of the brain. It controls and influences motor functions and vital automatic responses (e.g. breathing and heart rate) as well as alertness. It contains the cerebellum, medulla and pons.
2
Q
What is the cerebellum?
A
The cerebellum coordinates muscle movements (especially rapid movements), posture and balance. It is the size of a tennis ball, with 80% of brain neurons.
3
Q
What function(s) does the medulla have?
A
The medulla controls vital survival functions such as breathing and heart rate.
4
Q
What function(s) does the pons have?
A
The pons regulates sleep, arousal and some muscle movement.
