Why did Temple Quarter need regeneration
- The area was very run down.
- It gave a bad impression to visitors driving in or arriving at Temple Meads railway station
Temple Quarter regeneration targets
- 4k new jobs by 2020 and 17k by 2037
- 240k m² of either new/refurbished buildings, creating offices, homes, shops, and redeveloped railway station

Avon Riverside

- Old industrial buildings used for a range of light industries.
- Green open spaces were created by demolishing a former diesel depot
Silverthorne Lane

- The remains of the Bristol ironworks and gasworks.
- Difficult access - railway arches (part of the historic railway layout)
Temple Quay

- A former industrial area.
- The main industries were ropeworks, timber yards, malthouses, glassworks and potteries
Temple Meads City Gateway

- Dominated by Temple Meads railway station.
- Cut off from rest of area by Temple Gate dual carriageway built in 1970s.
Main features of Temple Quarter regeneration

- area became an Enterprise Zone - enabled new businesses to claim tax relief + low rents + quicker & easier planning procedures
- Electrification of London to Bristol railway line
- improved road layout w/links to rapid transit network and the Bristol-Bath cycle path
- Temple Meads Station - modern transport hub for city (£10.2M upgrade due for completion in 2023) - plans to increase passenger numbers by 40% over next decade
- Brunel’s Engine Shed - for high-tech + creative businesses (2013)

- creation of bus priority lanes to improve bus journey times + reliability
Brunel’s Engine Shed
Brunel’s Engine Shed is a re-used listed building. A new £1.7 million Innovation Centre is now built here, home to high-tech low-carbon companies:
- 18 high-tech companies
- 44 companies using the facilities
- a company developing the next gen. of wifi
- ultra-fast digital network provided by Bristol Gigabit.
