Telstar 2 and SCA Flashcards
What are the ASEPS separation minima?
14nm longitudinally for angles of 0 - 44 degrees.
17nm longitudinally for angles of 45 - 89 degrees.
19nm laterally.
5nm opposite direction.
ASEPS can be applied between flights operating at what levels and within what areas?
Between eligable flights at and above FL290.
WIthin the following areas:
Within Shanwick including along 45N from PITAX to 45N30W but excluding a defined area within the SE corner.
Within Gander along 45N at and East of 45N35W.
Within parts of Reykjavik airspace within acceptable radar coverage. (Not South of 57N20W 6230N30W 6030N40W).
From which point within the SE corner can we apply ASEPS to Westbound aircraft from, and which points can we not?
We can apply ASEPS between Westbound flights out of OMOKO and PITAX but not from TAMEL or BERUX.
What equipment is needed for ASEPS separations between flights?
ADS-B ADS-C CPDLC RNP4 RSP180 RCP240
Can we apply intervals on flights out of Brest or Madrid?
No, we can’t.
Will Brest accept Eastbound traffic that is separated by ASEPS?
No, they will not ordinarily accept it.
Can we use ASEPS for Eastbound flights into ATSIX?
No.
What are the rules regarding ASEPS aircraft entering Scottish Airspace and catch ups?
Scottish require ASEPS flights to have a speed catch up of no greater than M.04. If we cannot achieve this, we must coordinate it with them.
Be careful because Gander does not apply this restriction, so we have to catch it.
The minimum distance of 14nm or greater is required at landfall if the catch up is M.04 or less. Best endeavors shall be used to achieve a minimum distance of 45nm or greater.
How could we turn off ASEPS separations within GAATS+ if we needed to?
Request from the GS that the NO ASEPS table is loaded into the system.
What is the T9 / T290 frequency and where are the radio sites associated?
128.360
Mount Gabriel in Ireland.
As Pontes in Spain.
What do Shanwick Aeradio advise all flights making POS reports on T9 and T290 to do?
Monitor 128.360.
When a flight acknowledges this, a preformatted message is sent to us.
Who responds to all non-urgent flight transmissions on 128.360.
Shanwick Aeradio will transcribe messages received on VHF and respond to all non-urgent flight transmissions.
In a GAATS+ message from Ballygirreen, how could we determine whether the message has been received from a flight on the VHF frequency?
The suffix “ZX” will be included in the message.
What is DCPC?
Direct Controller Pilot Communications.
It is 2-way comms between Shanwick and aircraft.
To avoid audio distortion on the pilot’s side, Best Signal Select is in place on the VCCS. When monitoring or transmitting on 128.360, which receiver should be selected?
Both receivers shall be selected, regardless of which transmitter the VCCS selects.
If there is no response from a particular transmitter, what should a controller do.
Deselect the chosen transmitter before selecting the other transmitter.
If the quality of signal strength falls below a readable standard, what should a controller do?
Notify the GS who will act to suspend the VHF service.
When a flight acknowledged the instruction to monitor 128.360, what does the message from Ballygirreen to us say?
ADVISED TO MONITOR CHANNEL 128.360MHz
The DCPC status will also be updated on the flight profile.
Shanwick Aeradio are to notify Shanwick if a flight is unable to monitor 128.360. What are the controller actions if this occurs?
Apply loss of criteria procedures where GNSS separation is being applied.
What is the current adaptable time after entering the Ocean that GAATS+ checks the flights DCPC status?
4 minutes.
If DCPC status shows that Ballygirreen have not sent to preformatted message, what alert message do we receive?
NO VHF CONTACT RECEIVED FOR (ACID) IN SOUTHEAST CORNER
The controller should then contact Ballygirreen to establish the reason for this and apply loss of criteria procedures if the flight is unable to monitor 128.360.
