Teeth and Tooth Structure Flashcards
What 4 types of teeth does the mouth have?
- Incisors
- Canines
- Premolars
- Molars
What are incisors for?
To cut and bite into the food.
What are canines for?
They are the sharpest teeth so are used to rip apart food.
What are premolars for?
They are used for tearing and crushing food. They have a larger surface.
What are molars for?
They are the largest teeth and also have a large flat biting area. They are used to grind, tear and crush food (like the premolars).
What are the 4 parts of the structure of a tooth?
- Enamel
- Dentin
- Pulp or Nerve
- Bone (in the gum)
Describe the enamel:
It is in the outer surface of the tooth and is the hardest surface in our bodies.
Describe the dentin:
It is inside of the enamel and supparts it. It carries some nerve fibres.
Describe the pulp:
It is at center of the tooth. It is what keeps the tooth alive and in place.
Summary:
Teeth- designed to break food- samller pieces.
Gives enzymes larger surface area.
Covered in enamel- hard and non-living.
Beneath dentine- hard, bone-like and contains living cells. - are supplied with oxygen, glucose by blood vessels in pulp cavity.
Pulp cavity- contains nerves- resons can feel cold, hot and pain.
Incisors- found at front of mouth- used for cropping and biting food.
Other 3 teeth- found in mammals- canines, premolars and molars.
(Titulo) Tooth
Decay
What causes tooth decay and cavities?
Bacteria
What are bacteria produced from?
Debris
What does debris do?
It dissolves the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel) causing cavities. Form glucose.
What reaction does debris carry out?
Anaerobic respiration
