How do enzymes work? Flashcards
What theory is which describes how the enzymes work?
Lock and key theory.
Which thing complements the enzyme?
The substrate.
Which part of the lock and key theory represents the enzyme?
Lock
Which part of the lock and key theory represents the substrate?
Key
How does it work? (imagine diagram and label the parts)
enzyme + substrate ———-> enzyme-subsrate complex ————>enzyme + products
What will happen to the enzyme at the end of the reaction?
It will stay in its original shape and be reused repeatedly.
What des it mean thar at high temperatures enzymes become denatured?
That the shape of the active site of the enzyme has changed or become deformed so it cannot bind to its substrate anymore.
What does optimum temperature mean?
It is the temperature at which something (eg, enzymes) work best.
What is the optimum temperature for most human enzymes?
37 degrees celcius- normal body temperature.
