What is Mechanical (Physical) digestion?
A
It is the break down of pieces of food without changing the food molecules.

How does Mechanical digestion work?
A
It starts in the mouth where by chewing with theteeth the food is broken down so that it can be swallowed. Muscular contractions in the stomach continue this process.

What is Chemical digestion?
A
Is the break down of large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble food molecules by the action of enzymes.

Where does Chemical digestion occur?
A
This occurs in the mouth, stomach and small intestine.

Can both processes work together?
A
Mechanical digestion provides a larger surface area for the enzymes to work on (Chemical digestion).
