Digestion Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What 3 main food groups need to be digedsted?
A
Carbohydrates (starch, protein and fats.
2
Q
Carbohydrates (starch): What are they broken down into? What elements are present in it? In which types of food can you find it? (put 3 examples) Which enzymes digest it? Where is it digested?
A
- simple sugars
- CHO
- potetoes, bread, rice
- amylase
- mouth, small intestine
3
Q
Lipids (fats) What are they broken down into? What elements are present in it? In which types of food can you find it? (put 3 examples) Which enzymes digest it? Where is it digested?
A
- fatty acids
- CHO
- butter, margarine, oil
- lipase
- small intestine
4
Q
Protein What are they broken down into? What elements are present in it? In which types of food can you find it? (put 3 examples) Which enzymes digest it? Where is it digested?
A
- amino acids
- CHON
- fish, meat, eggs
- pepsin, trypsin
- stomach, small intestine
5
Q
What are enzymes?
A
They are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions, without being used up.
6
Q
What are the properties of enzymes?
A
- made of protein
- is specific to a substrate
- not used up (can be reused)
- have optimum temperatures and pH’s.
- at high temperatures they become denatured.
- act as catalysts (speed up chemical reactions)
7
Q
What is catalase?
A
It is an enzyme found in every living cell.
8
Q
What does catalase break down?
A
It is not involved in digestion but instead speeds up the brek down of a cell toxin called hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
9
Q
Enzyme equation for catalase:
A
catalase
Hydrogen Peroxide —————> Water + Oxygen
