What is the dentine
A bone like substance (softer than enamel) that is under the enamel
What is the pulp cavity
A space in the centre of the tooth that contains blood vessels
What is the cementum
A layer around the root which holds the tooth in place with the jaw
What are the periodontal fibres
These hold the tooth in the bone
What is plaque
Plaque consist of food particles, saliva and bacteria. It is constantly forming on the teeth and builds up on the surfaces of the teeth especially near the gums and between the teeth
What is tartar
Tartar is hardens plaque on the teeth. Tartar allows bacteria to grow and it causes teeth to become stained
What is tooth decay
If plaque is not removed, bacteria present in the mouth act on food particles (especially sugar) to produce acids. The acids attack tooth enamel wearing it away until it reaches the dentine underneath. This is tooth decay. The main cause if tooth decay is sugar consumption
What are the four types of teeth
