Q

oceanic continental

A

less denser oceanic crust is subducted beneath the less dence conitental crust
this forms a deep sea trench

eg:

it is a deconstructive margin

Q

deconstructive margin

oceanic oceanic

A

the two sections of oceanic crust have roughly the same density but the one which is slightly denser will be subducted

eg:

it is a deconstructive margin

deconstructive margine

this occurs where two plates are moving towards eachother (converging)

Q

continental continental

collision margin

A

at the collision margin, niether crust is subducted as they both havce the same density
* the two sections fold up against eachother
* this creates fold moutains as part of an enormous tectonic lift

eg: the himalayas

Q

continental continental or oceanic oceanic

constructive margin

A
  • the mantle is under pressure from the plates above
  • when they move apart, the pressure is released at the margin
  • the release of pressure causes the mantle to melt, producing magma
  • the magma is less dense than the pates above so it rises through the gap to produce new crust
  • it can errupt to form a volcano

Q

what happens when

continental continental or oceanic oceanic

plates move at dissimilar speeds

constructive margin

A
  • when the plates do not move in a uniform way (some moving faster than others) it causes pressure to build up.
  • when the pressure becomes too much, the plate cracks, making a fault line and causing an earthquake
  • further earthquakes may occur along the fault line once it has been created
