1.5 hazard profiles Flashcards
what is a hazard profile
A hazard profile compares the physical characteristics which all hazards share.
Hazard Profiles can help decision makers when deciding where to allocate the most human and financial resources.
magnitude
the higher the magnitude of a hazard the greater the chance of fatalities and injuries, and damageto buildings and infrastructure
speed of onset
the quicker the onset speed of a hazard, the less time people have to react to it. this means they may be less prepared and will have less time to react to the hazard
duration
the longer a hazardous event lasts, the greater the delay there is in the emergency responce and recovery
areal extent
typically, the larger the area affected by a hazard, the more people at risk
spatial predictability
being able to predict when and where a hazard will occur. if a hazard occurs on a well mapped and understood plate boundery, there is a higher level of spatial predicatability which gived more time for people to plan and prepare for the hazard
frequency
the more frequently a hazard occurs, the more systems may be in place to manage its potential imapct. however, if the same hazard occurs frequently. it is unlikey a country will reecover before the next hazard.
