1.4 Hazard/Disaster, vulnerability, resilience + hazard risk equation Flashcards
what is a hazard
something that is a potential threat to human life or property
what is a disaster
when a hazard occurs and has a significant impact on a population
what is resilience
it is the capacity for a community t compe with and recover from a natural disater.
it includes any systems put in place to manage a natural hazard once it has occured and pre planning done to reduce the number of people at risk
what is vulnerability
the level to which a community or geographical area will be damaged or affected by the occurence of a hazard.
the vulneerability of a community relates to its level of hazarard preparedness
factors that affect vulnerability of a community
- location in relation to topographical features
- location in relation to teh site of the hazard
- isolation/access to other communiteies
- age and gender structure of their population
- level of urbanisation
- population density
- degree of poverty/wealth of population
- level of education and literacy rates
hazard risk equation
risk= hazard x vulnerability/capacity to cope
factors that increase the risk of a hazard
- size of the affected area
- duration it is experienced for
- level of intensity or magnitude
- speed of onset
- time of day/season
- frequency
the Pressure and Release (PAR)model
is used to analyse factors which cause a population to be vulnerable to a hazard
