fluvioglacial processes Flashcards
fluvioglacial
erosion or deposition caused by meltwater from glaciers
stratification
fluvioglacial deposition creates a stratified landscape (where the sedement is found in clear layers) this is becuae there are seaonal variations in sediment accumulation.
sorting and grading
fluvioglacial deposits are sorted and graded by size
the larger materials are found closest to the glaciers snout where as the finer sediment is transported furthest awat fromt he glacier, as it requires less energy to be carried
imbrication
this is where rock deposits are laid down in distinctive directions. the longest axis of deposit will run parallel to the direction of flowing meltwater. large rocks will dip upstream and over lap eachother
