glacial deposition - processes Flashcards
ablasion
- debris held within the glaciers structure is abandoned as the glacier thaws
- meltwater proveides a means of moving the abandoned debris
flow
flow is the process by which high levels of meltwater cause the material deposits to slide to different locations
lodgement
- happens when subglacial material becomes lodged against uneven bedrock
- the moving glacier cannot overcome the friction that holds this material in place , so the material remains behinf while the glacier moves on
- slow moving
deformation
- deformation occurs where the bedrock is particularly soft
- ## the pressure of the moving glacier on this soft bedrock means it picks up the whole layer.fo bedrock and reposisions it in a deformed shape, such as a fold
rate of glacial deposition
speed
the speed of the glacier affects the amount of deposition occurinf
as a glacier moves into a new valley, it may be forced to change shape, slowing it down
the reduction in the glaciers energy means it would be able to carry as much rock or material
rate of glacial deposition
carrying capacity
the glacier deposits some of its rock material if it exceeds its carrying capacity
if a glacier comes across a rougher area, the increased friction may stop it from moving
- if this happens gravitiational pressure builds up which causes the glacier to melt a little, and te meltwater reduces the friction at the base
- the glacier is now smaller and carrying capacity is reduced
rate of glacial deposition
negative regime
if the glacier has a negative regime, it will have greater rates of ablatuob and will be losing mass. this means the glacier wont be able to carry as much materal, so it will deposit debris
