Technical Subject Areas Flashcards
If medical denied, can you fly with sport pilot certificate with driver’s license?
a sport pilot must hold at least a current and valid U.S. driver’s license in order to exercise this privilege.
Challenges during taxi operations?
1) Construction
2) Distractions
3) Fatigue
4) Miscommunication with ATC
5) etc.
What are the categories of airport signs?
Airport Signs and Markings
What are the Airport Signs?
mandatory Instructions, locations, destination and information signs
What are the Airport Markings?
Runway, taxiway, hold position, closed runway and taxiway
Pre-flight planning items for students
1) Airport signs and markings
2) Review of Airport Diagrams
3) Briefings
4) Plan for critical times and locations
5) checklist
6) Brief passengers
What is a practical classroom exercise on taxi safely?
Obtain an airport diagram
Taxi instruction to runway
and ask how would they perform
What are the recommended practices to increase student situational awareness during taxi operations?
1) Current airport diagram
2) Monitor ATC instructions
3) focus outside
4) Cross reference heading indicator
5) Clear left clear right
6) Progressive taxi instruction
Best practice of safety during the ground operations
1) Engine running: rotating beacon on
2) Taxi: Turn on nav light, position lights
3) crossing a runways all exterior lights
4) Hold short: All lights except landing lights
5) Take off all lights
If you see a plane turned on landing lights on, what is that men most likely.
ATC cleared take off
Without an operating control tower, what are the hazardous situations
More than one runway is being used
Instrument approach may be used on VFR runway or different runway.
Instrument approach to opposite direction
What are the pre-cautions that you need to take when entering or crossing a runway IN non towered airport?
Listen CTAF for inbound traffic
scan full runway
self announce your position and intentions
What is a HOT spot?
area with a history of potential risk of collision or runway incursion
where heightened attention by pilots and drivers is necessary.
Lack of preparation leads to runway incursions. What are they?
- Communications,
- Airport knowledge, and
- Cockpit procedures for maintaining orientation.
Relationship between pilot’s physical or mental condition and vision?
IMSAFE
Factors that degrade a pilot’s vision
Visibility conditions Windshield Conditions Bright Illumination Dim Illumination Dark Adaptation
What is Bright illumination?
Reflect off clouds, water and snow
Dim Illumination
Small print and color on charts may be not visible
What is see and avoid concept
Vigilance should be maintained by each person operating an aircraft
What is recommended scanning time
4-5 seconds inside and 15-16 seconds outside
What is the relationship between speed differential and collision risk?
Imagine the difference between riding a pedal tricycle down the road verses a bullet bike. The same bolting dog in the road would be more difficult to avoid on the fast bike.
relative altitude and difference of a flight in collision course. How do you determine?
no relative motion, it is likely to be on a collision course
If the other aircraft shows no lateral or vertical motion, but is increasing in size, take immediate evasive action.
Downwash and longitudinal stability
Downwash from wings strike on the horizontal stabilizer and applies downward pressure
Balances the nose heavy of the plane
Effects of speed on load factor
excess load can be imposed on the wing depends how fast airplane is moving
Relationship between Center of Lift and Center of Gravity
Wing’s center of lift is to the rear of the center of gravity. This makes plane nose heavy.
This creates tail up. Horizontal stabilizer has slight negative AOA
How does Angle of Incidence affect the control characteristics of your plane?
If the angle of incidence is 0 degrees, then that would require a nose high attitude and expose more of the underside of the fuselage to the relative wind. However, having an appropriate angle of incidence allows the fuselage to have a more horizontal orientation (and better visibility for the pilot from the cockpit) than if the wing was mounted exactly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage.
