what is a team?
a group with a sense of common goal or task, the pursuit of which requires collaboration & the co-ordination of activities of its members, who have regular and frequent interaction with each other
what are benefits to working as a team as a member and as a team?
member:
-learn how co-workers think, operate act under pressure etc
team:
-individual strengths of each member are gained
what is adair’s three circles model?
-this is a framework that describes the importance of balance of task, team and individual for a successful team
- a good leader will balance all 3 for success
-any neglecting in any of the 3 areas will result in reduced performance
-eg if task is neglected, the team may lack direction etc, if the team is neglected, there could be conflict and the task will suffer, if the individual is neglected , they may feel unmotivated and unsupported
what is a multi-displinary team?
-a group of professionals working in different fields
-each team member works in their own area and may meet and share findings
what is an inter-disciplinary team?
-groups of people representing different disciplines who work together and collaborate to solve problems or achieve a goal
-ie team members share their knowledge and work together & blend their expertise
eg doctor and nurse
what is a trans-disciplinary team?
people from different disciplines who work in a holistic way - they integrate their expertise to create a new plan etc
-eg physio and OT collab
what does a team need to succeed?
-common goals identified
-interaction of all members
-clarity of roles
-leadership
-open communication
-trust and respect
-decision making power
what are examples of belbin team roles?
-chairperson/ co-ordinator
-shaper
-plant
-resource investigator
-monitor
-implementer
-team worker
-finisher
compare turn taking vs overlapping conversation styles
-turn taking - people speak one at a time, waiting for the other person to finish before speaking
-overlapping - people often talk at the same time with interruptions and overlaps being common
what is fragmented working?
Fragmented working is when the professionals work alone, with minimal collaboration, each professional focuses only on their role
what is integrated working?
Professionals from different disciplines work together as a cohesive team , often sharing responsibilities and making decisions together
describe stages of group formation
- forming - group is coming together, the members are dependent on the leader for guidance and direction
- storming - people are more comfortable, but differences emerge and conflict can happen eg concerns about hierarchy
- norming - conflicts are resolved and team roles are established
- performing - team is working well together and is problem solving and very productive
what is core and periphery working as a type of multiprofessional working method?
-There is a central team or group of professionals (core) who make the main decisions.
-there is a periphery which are people who are still involved but more limited

what are examples of the roles of the leader in a team?
-increasing enthusiasm and excitement about the work
-helping them confront and resolve differences
-resolving conflict
-helping each team member with their personal; development
-helping people to collaborate etc
your physiotherapy manager has asked you to lead a team in the department to develop a patient information booklet on different pathologies such as OA, RA and osteoporosis. she suggests you select 4 members of the department - what type of people will you select to ensure good team working ie what skill sets would be required for this task?
-people with good communication skills
-creative thinkers
-good researchers
-people with clinical expertise in that area
-task focused individuals
-enthusiastic people
