Teaching Careers
School and non school settings offer many different opportunities to teach people of all
ages.
LITERACY
- Basic requirement for a person to be able to fully participate in society. (UNESCO)
- Literacy is concerned with how we communicate in society. It is about social practices and relationships, about knowledge, language and culture.
Physical literacy
- Motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for
engagement in physical activities for life - Foundation of a life-time physical activity
The physically literate individual
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and
fitness. - Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
- Recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social
interaction.

Teaching Responsibilities

Teaching Certification
- Each province has established minimum requirements that prospective teachers must
meet before they become legally certified to teach. - To work as a teacher in the Manitoba public school system, you must hold a
Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate or a Provisional Professional Teaching Certificate (valid for three [3] years). Once certified, a teacher is able to teach all grade levels from Kindergarten to Grade 12, except otherwise indicated on the certificate.
Coach Career
- Actively involved in a sport and have a positive influence on people’s lives.
- Way for former athletes to stay involved
- Opportunity to work with children and youth to help them develop and grow while teaching them skills and strategies and developing attitudes to successfully participate in a sport.
- Enjoyment of competition and/or the camaraderie and genuine relationships individuals build between themselves and the team members.
Coaching Responsibilities
- Instructional: Conducting practice and coaching a game.
- Managerial: Recording statistics, dealing with equipment, giving interviews, and recruiting.
- Institutional: Teaching or department duties or meetings.
Other expectations. - Reflecting a positive image and the values associated with sport.
- Involvement in community and civic affairs.
Securing a Coaching Position
Requires expertise gained through:
- Playing experience.
- Attending clinics and workshops.
- Being an official in your sport.
- Taking advantage of certification or licensing programs.
May require teaching certificate or master’s degree.
