What is dysphagia?

What is an OGD?
Gastroscopy
What is bulbar palsy?
Impairment of CN9, 10 and 11 which control the tongue. Can effect swallowing and coordination
Can oesophageal varacies cause dysphagia?
No- the pressure in these veins is low so although they can occlude the lumen the food will always push them out of the way
When should you NEVER do a barium swallow?
When there is a risk of aspiration
Oesophageal webs are common. WHen are these a problem?
When you don’t chew food properly
What is a change in bowel habit?
Any alteration in the patients regular bowel function for longer than 6 weeks
What is acute diarrhoea?
An abnormally frequent discharge of semisolid or fluid faecal matter from the bowel lasting less than 14 days.
Greater than 14 days is chronic diarrhoea
Which of the following is not a type of diarrhoea: Secretory, Osmotic, Inflammatory, Dysentery, Haemorrhagic?
Haemorrhagic
What is dysentery?
Diarrhoea with blood
What is constipation?
Infrequent bowel movements (typically 3 times per week or fewer) and difficulty during defication (straining during more than25% of bowel movements or a subjective sensation of hard stools)
Can you get rectal bleeding with IBS?
No
What does a low albumin suggest?
A chronic problem
