Taste Perception Flashcards
Taste perception in reference to Stimulus
Chemical molecules from food and water combine with saliva, this allows chemicals to stimulate taste buds
Reception in taste perception
-taste pores on the surface of the tongue open into the taste bud
-connecting surface of the tongue to taste receptors
-the taste receptors are located within taste buds
-taste receptors are the sensory receptors that detect the chemical molecules that enable taste
-gustatory hairs extend from the taste buds into the taste pores
-these hairs come in contact with tastants
Taste Buds
-most taste buds are on the tongue but can be found almost everywhere within the mouth
-estimated most people have 8000-10000 taste buds
-taste buds gradually decline over time
-taste buds are located within thousands of small bumps called papillae
-each taste bud consists of 50-150 taste receptors
-taste receptors have a lifespan of 10 days and are constantly replaced
Transduction in taste perception
taste receptors convert the chemical molecules into an electrical message
Perception in taste perception
opinion on the food or drink is made based on scent sight and taste
what are the 5 tastes
sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami
what is flavour?
flavour is a combination of the 5 basic tastes and all other bodily sensations
