What is Social Influence
the effects of the presence or actions of others, either real or imagined, on the way people think, feel and behave
it can be
-exerted in many different ways and may come from a person group or institution
-it can be constructive (helpful), destructive (harmful) or neutral (no effect)
What is a group
A group is a collection of 2 or more people
to be called a group, the individuals involved must also interact with and influence one another
they must also share a common purpose or goal
What does status mean
status refers to the importance of an individuals position in the group, as perceived by members of the group
can affect the expectations that individuals of each others behaviour
What does power refer to
power refers to an individuals ability to control or influence the thoughts, feelings or behaviours of others
what are the 6 types of social power
-reward power
-coercive power
-legitimate power
-referant power
-informational power
-expert power
what is reward power
ability to give positive or negative consequences
what is coercive power
ability to give negative or positive consequences in response to specific behaviour
what is legitimate power
an individuals status or position in a group that gives them the right power over those beneath them
what is referant power
individuals identify with or want to be like or liked by this person
what is informational power
having resources or information that are useful and are not available elsewhere
what is expert power
having special knowledge and skills that are desirable or needed
