Targeting Test Flashcards
Describe Target Vetting
Assesses the accuracy of the supporting intelligence to targeting. ID, Significance, CDE, etc.
Does the target support the CDRs end state?
Describe Target Validation
Validation ensures all vetted targets are in compliance with the law of war (LOW) and rules of engagement (ROE).
Describe BDA
Target damage or effect based on physical, functional, or higher systems functionality resulting from the application of lethal/nonlethal capabilities.
Describe CDE
Unintended or incidental damage to persons or objects which are not lawful targets. Conducted before operations so the CDR can prepare for and mitigate possible effects.

Identify 5 positive effects of target management
- Identifies intelligence gaps
- Prioritizes and synergizes operational effort
- Develops adaptive offensive strategy that is effects based and applies operational patience for higher gains
- Identifies opportunities for surge/synchronized operations
- Applies constant pressure on the adversary’s operational cycle
What are the 5 Army Targeting Guidelines?
- Focused [on achieving CDRs intent]
- Effects based
- Interdisciplinary
- Systematic [iterative and methodical according to plan]
- Directs [lethal and nonlethal actions to create desired effects]
What are the 6 steps of TVA?
- ID threat(s)
- Analyze threat(s) and ID critical factors
- ID HVT and develop HVTL
- Analyze friendly COA
- Analyze the HVTL & ID HPTs
- Develop HP
What are the three critical factors of a target?
Critical Capabilities
Critical Requirements
Critical Vulnerabilities
What are the 6 steps of the Joint Targeting Cycle?
- End-State and CDRs Objectives
- Target Development and Prioritization
- Capabilities Analysis
- CDRs Decision and Force Assignment
- Mission Planning and Force Execution
- Assessment
Describe the difference between an MOE and MOP
An MOE asks are we doing the right things? Are we meeting our intended purpose?
An MOP asks are we doing things right? Did we complete the task we intended to do?
What are the responsibilities of the SOLE?
- Critical to integrating the ARSOF/JSOTF commander’s targeting needs with the Joint Force
- Joint Warfare at Operational Level
- ARSOFs LNO to the JFACC
- Located at Air Ops Center (AOC)
Describe the difference between and HVT and HPT
The HVT is a target the enemy commander requires for the successful completion of the mission. The HPT is a subset of HVTs, whose loss to the enemy will significantly contribute to the success of the friendly COA success.
Define Targeting
The process of selecting (IPB) and prioritizing (CARVER) targets and matching the appropriate response to them, considering operational requirements and capabilities.
