T7 ETC and Oxidative Phosphorylation Flashcards
Outline the steps involved in oxidative phosphorylation
NADH and FADH2 come from Krebs cycle and ‘drop off’ Hs at ETC
Hs split into protons and electrons
Electrons go along the ETC being put into lower energy levels
This provides energy which powers the proton pump - protons are actively transported into the Intermembrane space forming the proton pool
This forms an electrochemical gradient
H+ travel by chemiosmosis from proton pool down stalked particle
Then travel through ATP synthase which produces energy for phosphorylation of ADP to ATP
The end result is e- from ETC and H+ from chemiosmosis in the matrix
These combine with oxygen breathed in to produce water
Equation for the formation of water in oxidative phosphorylation
2H+ + 2e- + 1/2O2 > H2O
