T5L2 Succesion Flashcards
Name the three types of succession
Primary
Secondary
Deflected
Describe the differences between the three types of succession
PS occurs when pioneer species colonise bare rock
SS occurs when an existing climax community has been cleared by a disturbance and the land is once again colonised
Deflected succession is when anthropogenic factors such as agriculture pause succession forming a plagioclimax
Give an example of deflected succession in the UK
If all farming in the UK ceased secondary succession would continue and the rest of the wild land in the UK would be re-established as coniferous forest
Give an example of primary succession
Sand dunes
In the past 200 years an iceberg melted from end A to end B to release bare rock. Explain why over the length of the rock from end A to B, the species present are different
M1/End A melted first so bare rock was colonised first
M2/By lichens and mosses
Which were then
M3/replaced by larger grasses and shrubs and then larger trees
M4/As you go from end B to A the species present become older and more permanent
M5/No species is found through the whole rock
Give an example of secondary succession
Colonisation of volcanic rock
Explain the term climax community
The last stage of succession where all organisms in the ecosystems balance with eachother in a STABLE community where there s ONE DOMINANT SPECIES
What has to start off sucession
a disturbance
Describe conditions of secondary succesion
Seeds left in soil
Soil may be fertile
Root systems may be pre existing
