T5L1 Abiotic and biotic factors Flashcards
Explain what zonation is and how it occurs
The distribution of organisms in a specific pattern due to changing characteristics. In different parts of an ecosystem different organisms need to be adapted to varying levels of biotic factors
What is a niche
The role of an organism in an ecosystem - where it lives and how it interacts with other organisms
Name the abiotic factor that describes how steep land is
Topography
Name the abiotic factor that describes how salty the sea is
Salinity
Name the abiotic factor that describes the soil
Edaphic factors
Name the abiotic factor that describes the minerals and sediment in the water
Turbidity
What are anthropogenic factors
Human activty that affects an ecosystem
Give examples of anthropogenic factors
Deforestation
Urbanisation
Oil spills
Effluent
What is mutualism
A relationship between species un which both parties benefit
Name and explain the two types of competition
Interspecific - between different species in the same niche
Intraspecific - between members of the same species
Explain the different abiotic factors present in forests vs seashore
Seashore - salinity, o2 conc, turbidity
Forest - deforestation, topography, edaphic pH
Why do the species present at the seashore change as you get into drier conditions
Because as the conditions change each zone is exposed to different abiotic and biotic factors so different organisms have different specific adaptations to deal with the specific conditions of their zones
Name the t
