FOLLICULAR CYST
when sac on ovary does not release an egg and the sac swells up with fluid
LUTEAL CYST
when sac releases egg and then reseals and fills with fluid
Complications of ovarian cysts
H - Haemorrhage
I - Infection
R - rupture
T - Torsion
what is torsion ?
Ovarian torsion is a condition that occurs when an ovary twists around the ligaments that hold it in place. This twisting can cut off blood flow to the ovary and fallopian tube.
Complications of rupture ?
symptoms depend on amount and character of contents
mild - pain relief
severe - peritonitis and pseudomyxoma peritonei -if rupture a mucin cyst can spread mucin all over the abdomen
How can epithelial ovarian tumours be classified?
benign
borderline - can spread around the abdomen but cant invade like cancer.
malignant
what tumour marker can you use for epithelial ovarian tumours?
CA125
How to calculate the risk of malignancy index? RMI
Menopausal status x USSS x CA125
Why is the ovary open to lots of different tumours?
due to the diversity of tissue types
