T3: Introduction to Implant Pros Flashcards
1
Q
What are dental implants?
A
- artificial tooth root that is surgically anchored into jaw to hold a replacement tooth or a denture in place
- they do not rely on adjacent teeth for support
2
Q
Implants labelling
A
3
Q
What can an implant restore?
A
- a single tooth
- multiple teeth
- secure denture firmly- implant overdenture
- eyes, ears, hearing aids and nose
4
Q
How to secure a denture firmly?
A
- using locator abutments
- using ball abutments
- gold bar
- CAD-CAM titanium bar
- Novaloc abutment: magnetic retention
5
Q
Post- Imp treatment complications
A
- peri- implant mucositis
- peri-implantitis
- loose/ fractured components
- late implant failure
6
Q
Role of GDP in implant
A
- OHI
- triage and diagnosis of a complication
- referral of the complications to an appropriately trained, competent implant dentist
- manage taking acc of SDCEP guidelines
7
Q
SDCEP Guidelines on Maintenance of Imp
A
8
Q
What is peri-implant mucositis?
A
- inflammation of peri-implant mucosa with no evidence of crestal bone loss
- tissues appear red and swollen and may bleed on gentle probing
9
Q
What to do if there are signs of peri-implant mucositis?
A
- exclude presence of peri-implantitis by carrying out radiographic examination to assess peri-implant bone levels
- treat as described in maintenance
- reassess at future visit to ensure inflammation has settled and a stable situation has been achieved
10
Q
What is Peri-implantitis?
A
- infection with suppuration and inflammation of soft tissues surrounding implant
- clinically significant loss of peri- implant crestal bone after adaptive phase
- tissues appear red and swollen
- bleed on gentle probing
11
Q
What to do when there are signs of peri-implantitis?
A
- radiographic examination to evaluate peri- implant bone levels
- if clinically significant progressing crestal bone is detected, refer back to clinician who placed implants
- if not possible, then treat as described in maintenance plus:
- follow up appt after 1-2 months to assess outcome
- seek advice from secondary care if no improvements
- if inflammation settled, arrange radiographic follow up in 6-12 months
