T3 - ATI Oxygen Therapy Flashcards
atelectasis
- airlessness or collapse of lung
- usually as a result of hypoventilation or obstruction
bi-level positive airway pressure
-ventilation-assistance modality that provides higher airway pressure during inspiration and lower pressure during expiration
bradypnea
abnormally slow respiratory rate
continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
-noninvasive, ventilation assistance that provides positive airway pressure throughout the pts respiratory cycle
cyanosis
-bluish discoloration, especially of the skin and mucous due to excessive concentration of deoxyhemogobin in the blood
dyspnea
difficult or labored breathing
face tent
soft, oxygen-delivery mask that fits under pts chin, loosely covers mouth and nose
flow meter
used to control rate of oxygen being delivered i liters per minute
flow rate
quantity of oxygen delivered in liters per minute
fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2)
oxygen level inhaled by or delivered to pt, expressed in percentage of atmospheric air
hypercapnia
excess of carbon dioxide in blood
hypoxemia
diminished amount of oxygen in arterial blood
hypoxia
reduced supply of oxygen to tissues below physiological levels despite adequate perfusion of the tissue by blood
incentive spirometer
resistive breathing device that helps pts exercise their breathing muscles
nonrebreather mask
oxygen-delivery apparatus used to deliver high flow rates and high concentrations of oxygen via a mask that fits snugly over the pts mouth and nose
oxygen tent
canopy that surround pt providing oxygen humidification and a cool environment to help control body temperature
partial nonrebreather mask
oxygen-delivery apparatus similar to a nonrebreather mask, but with a two-way valve allowing the pt to rebreathe exhaled air
positive pressure ventilation
technique that uses a mechanism such as mechanical ventilator to force air into the lungs to provide breathing assistance
simple face mask
- O2 delivery apparatus used for pts who require a moderate flow rate for short period of time via a plastic mask that fits snugly over mouth and nose
- helps prevent rebreathing of CO2
t-tube
t-shaped conduit with a piece that connects an O2 source to pts artificial airway
tidal volume
amount of air normally breathed in and out with each respiratory cycle either spontaneously or delivered via mechanical ventilation
tracheostomy collar
- aka tracheostomy mask
- O2 delivery apparatus that fits over a tracheostomy site and held in place by an adjustable elastic strap that fits around pts neck
venturi mask
- O2 delivery apparatus consisting of mask with holes on each side that allow exhaled air to escape and color-coded entrainment ports that are adjustable to allow regulation of concentration of O2 delivered
- often used for critically ill pts

- fire
- equipment malfunction
what are the early signs of hypoxia?
-restlessness
