Natural hazard
Any natural process that is a potential threat to human life and property
Natural event
A naturally occuring event in the physical environment, such as an earthquake, volcanic eruption or tropical storm.
Hazard risk
The probability or chance that a natural hazard may take place.
Tectonic hazard
A natural hazard caused by movement of tectonic plates (including volcanoes and earthquakes).
Earthquake
A shaking or vibration in the Earth’s crust.
Volcanic eruption
The release of material from under Earth’s crust to its surface
Atmospheric hazard
A natural hazard caused by extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes or tornadoes.
Tropical storms
Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones with winds in excess of 74mph or 118kph
Extreme weather
Weather that is markedly different from the normal weather that usually occurs.
Drought
A long period with less rainfall than normal
Monsoon
Rainy season in southern Asia when the southwestern monsoon blows, bringing heavy rains
Biological hazard
A natural hazard which involves living organisms, such as forest fires, pest infestation, diseases in crops or humans.
Geomorphological Hazard
A natural hazard which occurs on the Earth’s surface, such as flooding or landslides.
Tornado
A rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down to touch Earth’s surface.
