Paper 3 Flashcards
Arguments for building the church in the Cayman Islands
Economic:
Job opportunities
Would lead to higher proportion of a cruise, passengers coming ashore
Increased trade
4000 jobs - workers and a total of nearly £100 million - business report
Social:
Reduced cruise traffic by 50%
Argument against building the port in the Cayman Islands
Economic:
Loss of income for small boat operators
Environment:
- Damage to environment by killing the coral
- 15 acres of coral reef could be destroyed
- Vulnerable species in that area - hawksbill turtle
Social:
Increased car traffic
Which method of data collection did we use for the physical fieldwork investigation?
Velocity readings
Describe how we collected the velocity
Dropped a dog biscuit in the river
Measure a set distance (e.g. 10m)
Time how long it takes for the dog biscuit to go the distance
Repeat at 10 different sites
Do it after every tributary - stratified sampling
Repeat three times each site
Benefits and negatives of using a scatter graph to present the data in the physical fieldwork investigation
+ Shows a visible trend
+ easy to identify anomalies
- Line of best fit isn’t always accurate
Benefits and negatives of doing this velocity reading data collection method
+ simple to do
+ eco-friendly
+ can be done at multiple different sites
- The dog biscuit, get heavier and disintegrates the more it was used
Which other method could’ve been used to get the velocity readings? Why couldn’t we do this method?
could’ve use the flow meter but too expensive and requires the river to be a certain depth
Evaluate the validity of our physical fieldwork investigation?
Could of measured at different times of day, and at different times of the year
Could’ve use the flow meter other than a dog biscuit
Could’ve gone to a different river further down stream
What is the aim of the physical fieldwork investigation?
To investigate changes downstream at the carding Mill Valley
What was the aim at the human fieldwork investigation?
To investigate the differences between redeveloped and non-redeveloped areas in central Birmingham
Which method of data collection did we choose to do?
The environmental quality survey of the area
How did we measure the environmental quality of the area?
We visited four different locations - 3 redeveloped 1 was non-redeveloped.
Conducted bipolar analysis
This meant we could compare the findings of each site to see whether redevelopment had an impact
At each site we assessed air quality - such as level of pollution, litter, air and noise
We judged using the index 2+ positive 2- negative trying to avoid a 0 score
What was the method of data presentation we used human fieldwork investigation
Radar diagrams
Positives and negatives of using radar diagrams as a method of data presentation
+ useful as it shows all of the data collections in one diagram
- hard to interpret
What was the issue with doing our environment quality survey and one positive?
- We could’ve repeated it at different times of day
- It was subjective
- We could have visited an equal number of redeveloped and non-redeveloped areas
+ quick and easy to do
