Hurricane watch
An alert that is given 48 hours in advance to residents that lets them know a tropical storm is possible.

Hurricane warning
A warning given when it is likely that a tropical storm will strike an area within 24 hours.
Monitoring
Assessing the atmosphere to scan if tropical disturbances are likely to advance to tropical storm status.
Satellites
Space based observation stations used by organisations such as NASA which detect weather patterns.
Scatterometer
Radar system mounted on satellites to monitor near-surface ocean wind speeds and directions
Rainfall radar
Also known as a Doppler weather radar, this is a type of radar used to locate precipitation, predict its motion and estimate its type (rain, snow, hail).
Prediction
Using historical data and monitoring to predict the path of a tropical storm.
Protection
Ensuring infrastructure is prepared for the storm such building reinforcement or using storm shutters.
Planning
Raising awareness within the community of requirements and preparation required in advance of a tropical storm event including having emergency evacuation routes and kits.
Levee construction
Building natural embankments to reduce the impacts of heavy rains and storm surges.
Evacuation routes
Routes planned to give everyone ways out of the area to a safe meeting place in case of emergency.

National agencies
These are groups whose task it is to prepare, react and respond to natural hazards like tropical storms. These include the NOAA, FEMA and NASA in the USA.
