Dorset Coast Flashcards
1
Q
Unique features
A
- Area has stretches of both concordant and discordant geology
- Landforms (shown in map at the bottom) are both erosional and depositional in nature
- Concordant stretch contains only erosional landforms such as Lulworth cove and Durdle door (arch)
- The above is largely down to the geology and the prevailing wind from the South West leading to high energy waves
2
Q
How was Lulworth cove formed
A
- Started as a line of weakness through the hard Portland limestone of the outer cliff
- Erosional processes (hydraulic action, abrasion and solution) widened and deepened the open until it reached softer Whealden beds
- Erosion occurred more quickly in this soft rock creating a wider and deeper opening. Eventually forming the cove
