Short term response
how people react as the disaster happens and in the immediate aftermath
Long term response
Later reactions that occur in the weeks, months and years after the event.
Warnings
Advance notice that an impending tectonic hazard is imminent usually in the media such as news bulletins.
Evacuation
Mass departure or retreat from an area if the hazard is predicted
Rescue
Emergency services or volunteers who will attempt to save lives.
Short term aid
Emergency aid which will consist of food, water or shelter.
Lon term aid
Assistance given in grants, loans or donations to help with rebuilding of the infrastructure, homes and businesses.
Recovery of dead and injured
To help with emotional trauma, reuniting families and loved ones is an important immediate response.
Extinguish fires
This limits further destruction and death from this secondary effect
Repair utilities
To limit the spread of disease and infection, water supplies need to be repaired for drinking and sanitation.
Restore infrastructure
This allows rebuilding, movement of people and a restart of the economy with road and communication networks established.
Rebuild or replace homes
This allows people to leave their temporary accommodation and settle back into a normal routine.
Rebuild schools, churches and hospitals
This allows social development to resume.
Install hazard monitoring
Where there was no prediction in place such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami, a system of monitoring potential hazards will save lives.
