Photosynthesis
The process that occurs within the green parts of plants that uses sunlight and carbon dioxide and water to make nutrient (glucose) and oxygen.
Cellular Respiration
cellular process that occurs within plants and animals that uses nutrient (glucose) and oxygen to release the energy for life.
Cell
The basic structural unit of all living things.
Organelle
A specialised structure within a cell.
Mitosis
A process of cell division that makes two genetically identical daughter cells - happens for growth, repair and replacement of regular body cells.
Meiosis
A process of cell division that makes four genetically different gametes (sex cells) - happens in the ovaries and testes for sexual reproduction.
Multicellular
An organism having many differentiated and specialised cells, forming the tissues that make up organs, and systems that work together for the functioning of the whole organism.
Reproduction
The making of new individuals (offspring) from existing ones (parents).
Gamete
A sex cell (sperm or egg) - contains half the amount of genetic material as body cells.
Microorganism
An organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye, such as the protozoans giardia and cryptosporidium.
Ethics
To do with moral principles; the question of right and wrong.
