Vein Description

A

Thin muscular wall
Carries blood towards the heart
Carry deoxygenated blood (except for the pulmonary vein)

Close to the surface
Valves present to prevent the back-flow of blood

Capillary Description

A

Very thin wall, often one cell thick
Connect arteries and veins
The site of transfer of respiratory gases
Diffusion of gases and osmosis occurs here
Many are close to the surface
No valves present

17
Q

What does the diaphragm do?

A

A muscle at the base of the lungs which helps us breathe - it contracts to draw air into lungs and relaxes to push air out of the lungs.

18
Q

What does the trachea do?

A

A tube carrying air to and from the lungs

19
Q

What does the bronchi do?

A

Carry air from the trachea down to each lung.

20
Q

What does the ribs do?

A

Bones that protect the lungs and allow them to expand.

21
Q

4 chambers of the heart and the path the blood takes

A

Right and left ventricle of the heart - located in the bulbous section of the heart.
Right atrium - above the right ventricle. Contains two veins coming off it from opposite sides. These are the superior and interior venacova.
Left atrium - above left ventricle. Contains two veins coming off it which are closer together. These veins are called pulmonary veins.
Aorta - at top of the heart.
