Resource
A material that we use to make our lives easier.
Renewable Resource
A resource that will replenish itself over time.
Non-renewable Resource
A resource that will not replenish itself over time, or will take a long time to do so.
Ore
A compound or mixture of compounds from which it is economic to extract a desired substance such as metal.
Mining
A process that involves the removal of useful ores and other materials from the Earth.
Mineral
A pure (or nearly pure) compound that occurs in the Earth’s crust.
Biosphere
The parts of the Earth where living things are found.
Hydrosphere
The watery part of the Earth.
Atmosphere
The gaseous part of the Earth.
Geosphere
The solid, rocky part of the Earth.
Recycling
Any process or treatment that can be applied to waste materials to make them suitable for reuse.
Evaporation
The conversion of a liquid into a gas.
Transpiration
The movement of water through a plant from roots to leaves.
Condensation
The conversion of a gas into a liquid that leads to the formation of clouds.
Precipitation
When rain falls from the clouds to the ground.
Desalination
A process where salt is removed from seawater via reverse osmosis to create pure drinking water.
Osmosis
The movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high concentration of water to an area of low-concentration of water.
Photosynthesis
The process where plants convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using chlorophyll and energy from the sun.
Respiration
The process where plants and animals convert oxygen and glucose into energy.
