Syrah Vineyard Flashcards
Syrah Bud/Ripen Key
32
Syrah Budding
Late Budding (avoid spring frost which can lead to higher yields and better quality)
Syrah Ripening
Mid-Ripening (avoids autumn rains and less need for sorting)
Short ripening period between veraison ad harvest (short window for optimum harvesting)
Syrah Best Soils
Needs soils with low active lime content (do not use 110R) - ripening can be impacted if planted on soils with high lime and improper rootstock
Does not like limestone
Syrah Vigor/Canopy Management
Very vigorous (needs careful training which requires labor and increases cost)
Leafy canopy can cause shading and slow ripening (Canopy management required)
Syrah Aromas and Flavors
Primary - violet, red plum, blackberry, black pepper, herbal notes
Syrah Skins
Thick Skins (deep color and med+ tannins)
Syrah Hazards
Mistral wind (training/trellising increases cost)
Mites/Botrytis/Syrah Decline (Spraying increases cost)
Chlorosis/does not like limestone (sorting can increase cost)
Syrah Vine Peculiarities
Syrah Decline (can kill vine)
Berries are small and shrivel quickly when ripe
